課程概述

This course is a survey of research on language typology and language
universals. We will focus on the theoretical approaches taken to explain cross-
language similarities and differences and the developing methodology for cross-
linguistic study. We will discuss particular cross-linguistic generalizations
in syntax, morphology, and semantics and consider various explanations for
them. We will also consider some proposed typologies that relate syntactic,
morphological and semantic features.

Topics we will cover in this course are:
1. Typology of word order patterns
2. Case marking
3. Transitivity and valence-changing devices
4. Causatives
5. Head-marking and dependent-marking
6. Language prehistory
7. Grammatical hierarchy and the semantic map model
8. Voice continuum
9. Markedness and hierarchies
10. Coordination-Subordination continuum
11. Morphological typology
12. Semantic universals
13. Diachronic typology
14. Sources of explanation for language universals 
課程要求
1. Participation in class discussion, including in-class presentations of
language-data.
2. Three short assignments on typological topics to be assigned in class.
Assignments must be turned in on time.
3. One final term paper (15-20 pages) dealing with a typological survey of a
linguistic phenomenon.
4. Classroom presentation in week 15 summarizing the results of your term
paper.
